What is the use of a house if you don’t have a decent planet to put it on? – Henry David Thoreau
On our last blog post, we gave you a guide on how to get started on being green in the office. We hope that you’ve been making significant progress and also keeping track of this. To take it up a notch, why don’t you bring green to your home and introduce your family to this way of life? Here are some easy steps to get you started:
- Channel your inner farmer
We know that it is hard to get rid of rubbish at home and that it tends to accumulate. To curb this problem, you can create your compost by using decomposing waste. However, this compost does not work without a backyard garden to go with it. Plant some tomatoes, vegetables and fruit trees that are easy to maintain. We know that with work pressures, you might find it hard to maintain a large garden, so make one that will meet your needs.
- Proper disposal system
To create an appropriate disposal system, you have to have three disposal bins that you label for clarity of your family members and visitors; paper, glass/tins and waste. When disposing of these, the labels will show you what you can recycle and what you can entirely get rid of.
- Cut down, save more
As you save the environment, you can also get to save money. You can use appliances when you need them. Why use a heater in winter when you can wear warm clothes? Want to cool down? Wear lighter clothing and drink more cooling drinks rather than using fans. To save more, you can use LED lighting and natural lighting during the daytime. As stated in our previous article, they use 80% less energy than traditional lighting. Also, LEDs have a longer life span and higher distribution of light. Keeping off the lights whenever possible reduces power costs and conserves energy.
- Join the Tote side of life
Instead of using disposable bags, or as commonly known as plastic bags, you can do your shopping in style by using Tote Bags. Disposable bags are expensive and cause serious harm to the environment. If you can’t afford to buy a Tote bag, you can easily make one by using recycled material. They are simple to make and last for a very long time.
- Easy workouts
Sometimes it can be hard to find time to work out when you have a demanding schedule, but you can save money and the environment at the same time. Instead of driving to make your grocery shopping, why not take a walk to the shops and do your grocery shopping? You reduce carbon emission and get to do some leg day work out at the same time. Isn’t that grand?
There’s lots more that you can do to make your road to green better. Constant research will help you along the way. Don’t make the road to green a bore; make it fun by awarding yourself when you have made a good milestone?
Go green today, so there will be a better tomorrow.
