Highlights for the quarter
ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL CORPORATE AFFAIRS REPORT
- F19 MAD campaign activities began.
- Collection of waste from the Delta cages a cause for concern. Cages are not being emptied and this remains a challenge and a threat to corporate reputation.
- Chitungwiza Town Council removed 4 of our cages and Harare City Council has removed the Glen Norah A cage and is threatening to continue removing these if waste in the cages is not collected.
- Servicing of cages requires reinforcement to ensure there are no overflows. Support from commercial has become very critical.
- Citizen responsibility is still very peripheral and a lot of work has to be done to lobby citizens to manage waste responsibly.
- Harare City Council and its surrounding satellite towns capacity to collect refuse is not changing much in the positive and the burden of litter still prevails. Household based recycling options have become more critical.
- Waste management has become very topical with more communities organizing themselves to deal with the issues of litter and giving rising expectation on the participation of corporates especially Delta Corporation..
- The Delta-Boost waste management innovation program on course.
MAD Radio Awareness Campaign Advert
Advert flighted on ZiFM, Star FM, Radio Zimbabwe, Power FM and OK Instore.
MAD Road Show Awareness Campaign
- Held successful clean-up campaign road show activations in Harare, Epworth, and Chitungwiza areas in the period under review in partnership with Chitungwiza Council, and EMA.
- Objective of the program remains to create awareness to communities and educate them on responsible managing waste.
MAD Facebook Campaign
- Launched the Facebook campaign.
- Campaign to articulate resultant problems because of poor waste management.
MAD Facebook Promotion
- Launched the Facebook competition.
- Interim Prizes are MAD Kits comprising of MAD memorabilia
- Winners are selected based on their contribution to waste management issues.
- Winners have come from Harare, Mutare, Bulawayo in the initial promotion draws.
Delta-BOOST Ethics Showcase – #Imad Campaign.
- The 2018 programme, is on course across the 11 universities in the country. This year’s focus is on waste management.
- Site visits were conducted for the 2018 projects at NUST, and CUT Universities. Students are finalising their waste management projects for the year. National competitions will be held on 9 November 2018 at rainbow Towers.
- The Castle Lite team is making pillows from recycled PET bottles. The pillows cost an average of 4 dollars as the final product. The Team has partnered with two recycling companies in Bulawayo that are into shredding of PET bottles.
Delta-BOOST Ethics Showcase – #Imad Campaign.
- Afri Waste team is making cooler bags, bins and hats from cans. The team has added shades and carports to its product portfolio. Afri Waste is looking at developing the first mobile app that deals with waste management in Zimbabwe.
- Investment money for this project is $7,000. The disbursement of the investments earned by the teams is administered based on comprehensive proposals indicating how teams will allocate the money to further developing their projects.
